Being a medical student is no easy feat. After working intensely to score top marks on your final intermediate exams in pre-medical, you must compete for the highly sought-after admission into a medical college.

However, this is not to say that a career in the medical field is not rewarding. Doctors are highly-respected and well-paid individuals. Not only do they have the chance to learn the intricacies of the human body and the world around us, but they also have the honor of saving human lives.

With that said, the medical field has huge scope and plenty of different specializations. So if you are a pre-medical intermediate students who does not want to pursue the common medical specializations, then check out this list of interesting and unique medical specializations that you can opt for after medical school!


This is an exciting medical specialization that uses nuclear radiation for the medical imaging of patients, to diagnose and treat illnesses and disease. Radiologists are responsible for analyzing and interpreting various x-ray scans, MRIs, ultrasounds, CT scans, and more. Not only that, but radiologists are further specialized in scanning certain body parts, or in providing radiation therapy to patients. FSc students who are interested in scanning and analyzing the depths of the human body may be interested in this specialization.


If you are interested in studying and treating the human heart, then this is the medical specialization for you! Cardiologists are responsible for monitoring cardiovascular health. Invasive cardiologists are further specialized for treating and operating those with heart failure, by performing heart bypass operations, inserting pacemakers or stents, or transplants. Pre-medical intermediate students who are interested in this field require at least one year of specialized training, on top of general cardiology training.


This it the medical specialization that is responsible for the study and treatment of blood. If you are one of the pre-medical intermediate students that don’t squirm at the thought of blood, then this may be the specialization for you! Hematology focuses on the treatment of blood-related diseases and disorders, such as leukemia, lymphoma, hemophilia, thalassemia, and even anemia. Hematologists often work in collaboration with other doctors, such as oncologists, cardiologists, or pediatricians.


Dermatology deals with the study and treatment of the largest human organ; skin! Dermatologists provide diagnosis and treatment for diseases and cosmetic problems involving skin, hair, and nails. This included diseases such as psoriasis, skin cancer, dermatitis, vitiligo, fungal infections, and acne. Often times, dermatologists also perform cosmetic procedures such as laser treatment, skin grafts, and more. In general, pre-medical intermediate students who are interested in this medical specialization require at least 4 years of medical training.


Oncology is the unique medical field that deals with the study, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. Oncologists tend to have further specializations, such as medical oncologists, surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, etc… However, in the treatment of cancer patients, a collaboration between different oncology specialists is often required. Oncologists are not only responsible for diagnosing cancer, but also for identifying the stage, communicating with the patient and their family, providing treatment, and managing the symptoms of cancer and its treatment. This is a great medical specialization for pre-medical intermediate students who are very passionate about cancer treatment and saving lives.
