When it comes to tourism in Pakistan, one city that should not be overlooked is Peshawar. As the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) province, Peshawar is filled with plenty of rich historical monuments and tourist destinations, making it a great place to visit during your summer vacations. Here are just a few popular tourist locations in Peshawar, Pakistan.

Bala Hisar Fort

Bala Hisar Fort, which translates to “high fort” is a historic fortress which was built and reconstructed several times throughout history. In fact, this majestic fort was believed to be present during the Mughal Empire, yet it was named by the Afghan King Timur Shah Durrani. Interestingly enough, Bala Hisar Fort is still used by the army today. However, it has a military museum and can be visited by tourists on permission. Either way, this fort is a beautiful and eye-catching structure for any tourist who passes by.

Mahabat Khan Mosque

This alluring mosque has a strong place in the history of Pakistan. It was constructed in 1630 during the Mughal Empire. This white building is lavishly decorated on the inside with floral and geometric designs and paintings. On the outside, there is a glittering ablution pool located in the center. These gorgeous features set it apart from other mosques and make it a popular tourist location for those visiting Peshawar.

Peshawar Museum

This museum was constructed in 1906 in memory of Queen Victoria. It is a popular travel destination among tourists due to its large and impressive collection of Gandhara art and particularly its Buddhist sculptures. Moreover, the structure of the museum itself is quite impressive, as it has elements of British, Hindu, Buddhist, and Mughal style architecture. When traveling to Peshawar, visiting Peshawar Museum is a must. You’ll surely be taken aback by the gorgeous artwork and displays.

Cunningham Clock Tower

Also known as the “Ghanta Ghar”, the Cunningham Clock Tower is a historical structure from the colonial times. It was presented by Queen Elizabeth in honor of the Diamond Jubilee in India in 1900 A.D. The tower is named after the former British governor, Sir George Cunningham. This clock tower is located within the inner city which is constantly bustling and busy. It will give you the true experience of traveling to Peshawar. Furthermore, the building was constructed with impressive architecture and grandeur, so it is definitely worth the visit.

Sethi House Museum

Located nearby the Ghanta Ghar is the Sethi House Museum, which was originally built by the elite Sethi family. The Sethi House is an architectural masterpiece in Peshawar, with its beautiful woodwork, colorful glass windows, and even a fountain in the courtyard, although the fountain is unfortunately no longer operational. The Sethi House is a popular spot to visit as a tourist as it is greatly representative of Peshawar’s culture and history.
