How to Motivate Your Younger Sibling to Study

Siblings have an interesting relationship. They are best friends, worst enemies, pests, and role models all at once. Elder siblings especially have a responsibility to look out for their younger siblings and to help them out.

In fact, various studies have shown that older siblings can be just as influential, if not more, as their parents in the development of a student. This means that students who have support from their older siblings are more likely to pick up on good habits and perform well academically and socially.

Therefore, older siblings can play a helpful and influential role in motivating their younger brother or sister for their exam preparation. Whether it is giving a pep-talk when they feel down, listening to their academic concerns, or offering to help them study during their exam preparation, there is a lot that older siblings can do to help.

Here are some tips to help and motivate your younger sibling during their exam preparation:

Observe

Firstly, observe their behavior and attitude towards their exam preparation. Try to notice their strengths and weaknesses in their studies. A simple observation of their exam-related fears and apprehensions can go a long way. Once you have observed and understood your siblings strengths and weaknesses, it will be much easier to help them design an effective exam preparation strategy.

Listen

Do not be quick to judge your siblings based on your observation. It is important to listen to their concerns. If a confrontation seems too formal, then start a casual conversation asking how their exam preparation is going. Also share personal experiences from your final exams. This will give them a level of trust, so they will feel more comfortable sharing their problems with you. After they confide in you, it will be easier to work together to create an effective exam preparation strategy.

Strategy

Sit down together and develop an exam preparation strategy. Ask them to suggest their favorite learning methods. Also suggest study strategies that work for you during exam season. At this time, you should also recommend study tips and learning methods based on your observations. This way, you can choose strategies that focus on their strengths, and that help overcome their weaknesses. The exam preparation strategy should include a weekly schedule and study timings. Also include study methods such as past papers practice, flow charts, flashcards, etc..

Assist

Next, offer your assistance for their exam preparation. Offer to teach them a tricky chapter, check their past papers solutions, help them work through confusing past papers questions, or quiz their knowledge. This will not only be a huge source of support and motivation, but will also help them overcome their difficulties. Or you can offer support by doing your own work alongside them while they study and solve past papers. They will greatly appreciate your assistance and presence.

Moral Support

Your younger siblings need your moral support along with your assistance. Encouraging them and praising their efforts will go a long way. If you catch a mistake while checking their past papers questions, do not scold them, but help them work through the mistake. On the other hand, let them know when they are doing a good job. As their older sibling, they want your approval. At the same time, they will not respond well to your criticism and scolding, so avoid this.

Role Model

Whether it seems like it or not, you are a role model to your younger siblings. They will pick up on your habits, and are greatly influenced by your words. So make sure you are setting a good example for them. If you emphasize your work ethic and importance of exams, they will also follow suit. Moreover, if you treat them with kindness and encourage them during their final exams, they will surely perform better and be more motivated to study.

Older siblings have a sensitive role to play for their younger siblings. So, be sure to follow these steps to help your younger brother or sister on their final exams!
