General knowledge is an important part of a child’s learning and awareness. It is an indicator of intelligence and helps the child understand the world better. It provides a foundation for learning about other subjects. It is a compulsory course in the school curriculum and gets divided into different subjects like history, geography, and social studies over time. However, many children find it general knowledge boring.
Reading not only improves comprehension and vocabulary. It also increases general knowledge. Encourage your child to read. It does not have to be encyclopedias necessarily. Many fictional books also contain historic facts. Moreover, do not make your child cram all the facts from a book. It will make him/her detest the subject.
Children love to play, so why not mix up education with entertainment. Play interactive educational games with your child like ‘World Bingo’. Many board games and group games are also available that you can recommend to your child.
Discuss the current events with your child. Tell them the context of the major incident in the form of a story. That will pique their interest in what is happening around them. Once a conversation starts, show them the relevant documentaries, YouTube clips, and cartoons to reinforce what they have learned.
Reading newspaper is a great source to increase one’s general knowledge. Encourage your child to read and watch the news daily. It may seem boring for them. If you make this activity interactive, i.e., you engage them into a discussion, that will become interesting for them.
When something intrigues your child, take it as an opportunity to do research together. Be it a query on dinosaurs or space, look it up on Google with the kid, many informative websites will pop up. However, do not go for boring, lengthy information, as it might be of interest to you but not the kid. There are many informative websites for kids including Guinness World Records and Funology.
