Important Questions in English for 9th Class

Students have to face board exams for the first time when they enter the 9th class. The curriculum in this class will be completely foreign to you, no matter which Pakistani education board you’re in. Science subjects like physics, chemistry, and biology are also new for students because they’re used to studying science as a general subject.

In order to prepare for your board exams well and meet the standards of your education board, you need to make preparations that aren’t just learning all the topics in your curriculum. Most students immediately become familiar with using past papers when they enter the 9th class.

Past papers, whether solved or unsolved, are probably the most important part of your exam preparation. Aside from actually understanding the material, that is. So, to ensure that your board exam preparations will be perfect, you need to grasp the idea of certain questions and concepts being more important than others.

Here are the most important questions in English for 9th class students, in all education boards:

  • Literature: chapter-related short answers

After your objective (MCQs) paper, you’ll get your subjective paper. And the first question will be about the chapters in your textbook. The best way to prepare for these would be to thoroughly read your textbook and understand each chapter. An easier way would be to use past papers to learn the questions that are constantly reappearing in board exams.

  • Literature: poems, reference-to-context, and paraphrasing

Similar to short answers, you’ll have to understand all the poems in your textbook to answer this question. Most boards pick two poems in the textbook that appear in exams alternatively. William Wordsworth’s Daffodils and Robert Frost’s Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening are extremely important. Learn how to explain stanzas and verses in your own words. Metaphors, personifications, and imagery are very important too.

  1. Literature/reading: reading and understanding stanzas and answering questions

In many boards, like the Federal Board, students have to understand and interpret a stanza from a poem in their textbook. Then, they’re required to answer some questions about that stanza.

  • Reading: passages

This is similar to #3, in the sense that you’ll have to understand some text. However, this will be a random passage that will test your reading ability. You’ll have to answer some questions about that passage. These answers should be different from #1. You should not go into detail, just answer what you’re asked.

  • Grammar: active and passive voices

You’ll be asked to change the voice of some sentences in this question.

  • Grammar: correct forms of verbs and nouns

Understand the different forms of verbs and nouns. In this question, you will have to provide the correct form of a word which will be written in parenthesis.

  • Grammar: punctuation

There will be a sentence or a paragraph and you will need to correct/add its punctuation.

  • Writing: letters and applications

This is one of the most important questions. Most letters are informal in 9th class, some boards have formal letters (like letters to the editor).

  • Writing: paragraphs, sentences, and essays

In some boards, like Lahore Board, students are asked to write 10 sentences about a topic. You can prepare for essays, sentences, and paragraphs together. Be mindful of the word limits and practice with past papers. The topics are always general. Make sure you keep track of the current affairs in Pakistan and practice argumentative writing for essays.

  • Writing: dialogues

Dialogue-writing is optional with either #8 or #9. Practice simple dialogue writing with past papers.

  • Translations: Urdu to English, vice versa

This a question that appears in every board’s exams. In Karachi Board, you have the option of choosing Sindhi instead of Urdu. There will be some sentences or a paragraph that you will have to translate. In some boards, the sentences are in Urdu, but in others it’s English. Make sure that you translate idioms into idioms, not literal translations.

  • MCQs

MCQs cover your entire English syllabus. It’s best to practice with past papers and read your textbook thoroughly.

These are the important questions for English in the 9th class of every education board in Pakistan. You can use the help of past papers, which are available on many online platforms. Tutoria.pk also offers solved past papers and book notes for all major education boards in Pakistan.
